Does it seem to you that your to-do list is unending and that you’re never quite able to carve out enough time for your family? If you’re a busy mom working outside the home, it’s all too easy to think that family time is, of necessity, the first thing to be sacrificed in the interest of your incredibly packed schedule. But what if there were ways to take back your schedule and the intimate moments you and your loved ones enjoy?
The pressure on today’s moms living in a tech-driven world can feel like too much at times. They are expected to manage a career, keep the household running smoothly, and still be present when the allure of technology beckons. And there are still supposed to be those magical moments of motherhood, too. But with a few easy-to-implement life hacks, there’s a possibility that moms can achieve a more balanced life and connect with their kids in a way that feels good and right.
Today, our objective is straightforward. We want to demonstrate that technology need not be an obstacle and instead can be an ally. With a few thoughtful modifications, technology can help make the home environment peaceful and harmonious, and it can restore the quality time that families like mine so desperately need.
Identify the Time-Stealers and Set Priorities
Recognize the Hidden Time-Wasters in Your Day
It’s simple to lose track of time on activities that don’t genuinely contribute to the value of your day—scrolling through social media, tidying up for the third time, or being a prisoner to a recalcitrant inbox. We often think of these time-sucking diversions as “necessary” and “inevitable.” But what if they aren’t? What if they’re robbing you of precious moments and leaving you engaged in a constant battle for mental clarity?
What if, instead of being stretched too thin and pulled in too many directions, you were just concentrated in a very few areas that well served your interests and your family?
Prioritize What Matters Most: Quality Over Quantity
The reality of modern life is that many of us simply don’t have the hours in the day to spend with our family. Or do we? The question is: How do we prioritize those moments? Though it may seem counterintuitive, the path to achieving more family time could lie in creating discrete bursts of focused interactions that we can string together into a “day in the life” of the art of family presence.
Family life doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be a paced alternation of coming together and drifting apart that, over time, leads to deeper connections. Whether you have five minutes or a few hours, being present counts.
Leverage Technology to Simplify Your Life
Use Smart Scheduling Tools to Streamline Your Day
Balancing household, work, and family responsibilities often requires the skills of a circus performer. But with the right digital tools, you can keep everything running smoothly. Scheduling apps like Cozi or Google Calendar let you organize not only your work but also your family events, appointments, and to-dos in a single shared interface. With these apps, everyone in the family has access to the same information—and nothing slips through the cracks.
For keeping work and personal projects organized, I recommend Todoist or Trello. Both apps are good for making lists and visualizing tasks ahead. If you want to stay calm and collected while managing a busy family life, the right tools can help free up mental space and time so you can be more present with your family.
Automate Routine Tasks to Free Up More Family Time
Throughout any given day, several simple, day-to-day tasks can be more efficiently accomplished or even completely delegated to technology. Services like Instacart and Amazon Fresh can do the grocery shopping for you, and smart home devices like Alexa and Google Home can perform a variety of helpful functions that range from the mundane to the almost magical.
When you streamline or automate these little things, you end up saving a surprisingly large amount of time. And what you do with that reclaimed time is really up to you.
Create Family Time Rituals That Are Easy to Keep
Set a Family Tech-Free Time Every Day
The presence of technology can be one of the biggest obstacles to true family togetherness. The convenient devices of today—smartphones, tablets, and flat-screen TVs—tend to pull our attention away from the people we’re supposed to be with. That’s why I suggest the not-so-radical idea of having a tech-free hour or two; I can’t think of a better way to reconnect.
I’ve been guilty of all kinds of technology-related family sins: turning on Family Movie Night, only to have everyone engrossed in their iPads along the way; sitting in a “live” performance of a family board game, with everyone’s noses buried in their phones, completely unaware of our shared reality.
Schedule Special “Family Days” and Stick to Them
Life can be hectic, but it’s essential to carve out time for family in today’s fast-paced world. The good news is that ensuring quality time with your loved ones doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking. A shared experience with your family can be as simple as a jaunt to the park, a night at the movies, or even just an afternoon spent cooking a meal together.
Of course, there is one catch: Must you make this time happen regularly, for it to become what many old folks like me will call a “family tradition”?
Conclusion
Even in our fast-paced world, it’s still possible for mothers to carve out special family time. The key is to eliminate unnecessary time-sucks, leverage technology where it makes sense, and create old-fashioned, simple, tech-free family rituals that cultivate great moments together.
